I wanted to do a quick post about some things I bet you didn't know about adoption. Ever thought about adopting a child? Read on!
If you adopt a child, whether form Russia or the USA or any other country, the adoption tax credit is over $12,000 now!! See the IRS website if you don't believe me. That means you get back $12,000 - you don't have to pay it. [Tax credit is better than tax deduction] You can phase it over 3 years also. So even if it costs $25K to adopt a child - that's what my adoptions cost, roughly - you get back nearly half the amount as a tax credit.
Most large companies have an adoption grant available, if you ask for it. Home Depot's grant was about $3,000. I also got a grant from the state of Georgia of $2,000 for Michael because he is considered special needs.
Also -
There are many many children in China with limb differences, ranging from a clubfoot or a few missing fingers to missing entire arms and legs. If you like the China programs and meet their qualifications, you can adopt a limb difference child in about 6 months. If you insist on a non special needs child you're looking at wait times of several years.
There are agencies like Harrah's that have limb difference kids available. Go here for more information. These are usually very sweet kids who just need a chance.
Michael is a completely normal kid. Most of the kids with limb differences are completely independent and need little or no help with normal daily activities. My friend Stephanie writes about her son Bohan in her blog - Bohan is missing part of his leg and has a couple of other very minor issues but he's completely independent.
Happy Monday!
