I know my friend Cindy’s gardening
enthusiasm is rubbing off on me, because the only stress-free time I’ve had
today has been either in my garden or reading about gardening.
I went to Home Depot [yay!] at
lunch. There’s a big, nice store right across from corporate headquarters, what
a coincidence. They didn’t have everything I was looking for, but I found some
more Impatiens for the front flower bed, and a small pepper plant. The kids
pulled pansies out of the front bed yesterday and put in the Impatiens. I love
the pinks and purples. I am trying to do everything out front in pots in pinks
and purples and whites. However, I have bulbs that have come up and I can’t
remember what colors they are – we will have some gladioli and tulips in colors
I like to think of as Lord-Only-Knows. It’s all good.
Most exciting, I bought two bags of
mushroom compost. Then I went back to the office and read up on it while I ate
my lunch. I am going to put it in my melon patch. My brother likes to garden,
and he told me to buy it. He also sent me a link to a cool website, and I found
this terrific article. It’s basic enough even for me, a
novice gardener.
I got another awful sinus headache this afternoon at work. It was a doozy. I can only think the pollen had something to do with it. I left work early. Motrin helps a bit, sometimes, but not always. Sometimes just getting in a different environment helps, for some reason.
When I came home I found a thriving pumpkin plant in the new garden area I am cultivating at the side of the house. Michael said "Oh, remember that we threw the Halloween pumpkin over here last fall?!" He was right. That pumpkin carcass I considered compost has seeded itself and the little plant is thriving. Add in some mushroom compost and it should go to town, along with my watermelons and cantaloupes...
Our movie tonight was The
Replacements. As much as I despise football, I like football movies, if they
have “heart.” Gene Hackman is great in it. The Replacements is an excellent
film - I don't care that the critics didn't like it. Keanu Reeves is actually quite credible as quarterback Shane Falco. When
I told Alesia his father is Asian, her eyes got very wide. Since I suspect both
my kids are part Asian, I want them to see that sort of diversity is
everywhere.
Funeral tomorrow. Mother is staying home with the kids. Funny that word, funeral, starts with “fun.” I look forward to seeing my cousins but I dread the rest of it. As Alesia said tonight at dinner. “Better go early because you always get lost, Mom.” I glared at her. She continued, “You got lost in a parking lot once, remember?”
Michael: "Yeah, you always get lost, Mom."
Kids will flat keep you honest…
