Well, with great relief I can say I
am once again gainfully employed. I had a second interview with the lawyer I
spoke with the other day, Tanya, and she offered me a job. It will be 20-30
hours a week, depending on their caseload, and the pay is generous. I told them
I would start Monday.
Their offices are 24 minutes away. I
can work during the hours Michael is in school.
It
may work into a full-time position, too, down the road, and if so it will mean
a lot more money than I was making at Home Depot.
I was understandably anxious when I got laid off, but I knew God had a plan for
me, and I just needed to be patient. It's been good to be home all summer, to
be with the kids, get things done around the house, and promote the book. The
new job is very close to home [25 minutes away], the hours are very flexible, and
I even get my own office with a window! And, really cool - I can wear Crocs and
casual clothes to work. I can take off time as needed if the kids have things I
need to take care of. So I am excited.
I always said if I ever went back to a law firm it would have to be a special
situation, and I feel this is just that situation. I will have time to be with
the kids and time to write, and will still make a decent living.
One
thing I liked about the new firm is that I can dress casually and wear Crocs (unless
there’s a client in there) – what a relief - YAY! Also, I get a real office
with a window, not a cubicle! Triple YAY! I hate cube farms.
I
came home and told the kids about the new job, and they were very non-excited.
Mother said later, that’s a good sign, means they weren’t eaten up with
anxiety. I think Mother was really anxious – she said she had a hard time
sleeping last night. She’s been praying hard over the job situation, of course.
Alesia
helped Michael with his science homework. If she has time to help him, he does
well. She’s good with math, too. We tell her that she should be a teacher one
day but she isn’t keen on the idea. I think she should teach math. There’s
always a shortage of math teachers.
We
went out to a little nearby Thai restaurant to celebrate my new job. The food
was excellent. Both kids expressed unhappiness at being there, but only later
did I understand why. The last time we were there Bruce was with us. They
missed him. I did, too.
This
little place, Mai Thai in Tucker, has excellent food. The kids had sushi.
Mother had scallops. The two things Mother always orders in a restaurant are
either scallops or prime rib. Then we went by Rita’s and got some frozen
custard. Well, Michael had an Italian ice drink that was blue raspberry.
I feel sort or relieved and excited and regretful all at the same time. I am not great at staying at home all day. I get bored when the kids aren’t around. I am excited to be back in the swing of things, though, in a firm. I like to stay in the background, but litigation is by far the most interesting of all the areas of law, IMHO.

Mother blogged again here, and it's her best post yet. I had no idea she and Dad had an encounter with the Secret Service years ago!
