Seems so strange that it’s already
August. Where did the summer go?!
Isn’t it funny how sometimes two
people can look at the same thing and not see the same thing?! Melissa
was visiting late yesterday afternoon and while the kids were all jumping on
the trampoline we were looking at my raised bed, discussing gardens. I have
about 6 ears of corn. I was admiring them, and I found two small cucumbers,
among the 6 or so plants. Melissa found about 8 more cukes! It was amazing. I
gave her some for the girls, of course. Russian-speaking folks usually love
cucumbers. It’s the one raw veggie my kids will almost always eat – well, and
tomatoes.
We have had a leisurely day today.
The kids were sore, from all the rough and tumble playing at the pool and in
the yard for the past couple of days. Alesia was “down in the back” as we say
in East Tennessee. We were sitting at breakfast talking about our various aches
and pains and as soon as Alesia said “My back hurts from the other day. I cannot
bend over!” Mother and I just looked at each other.
“Welcome to being an adult,” I said
quietly.
Michael and I have been reading the
first Harry Potter book. He wasn’t too enthusiastic about reading it, in the
beginning, but now has decided it’s really interesting. So I have been reading
it to him, and he follows along as I read. I think it’s a good way to help him
improve his reading. I am really enjoying the book, too. When we were in the
car today going to lunch, I very casually asked him a couple of questions about
the book, sneaking in a little reading comprehension. I hope we can finish the
book before school starts.
My kids start back to school August
10th. I have to take Michael next week to get his schedule, meet his
teacher, get a supply list, etc. I dread it. I have to present a valid utility
bill proving I live in the right area. My parents never had to do that. Seems
idiotic to me. I guess people are trying to sneak their kids in to the school.
We had lunch at our favorite Mexican
restaurant, which is Mother and Michael’s favorite. Alesia had a bowl of
chicken soup and I had 3 tacos. I don’t care much for Mexican food, but this
little restaurant is very quiet, has excellent food, and it’s not expensive. I
don’t mind going there at all. Michael has gotten where he loves guacamole,
which delights Mother – “Avocados are full of vitamins!” she always
enthuses. Um, yeah, but he doesn’t care. He just likes the taste.
I let Alesia drive today while we
did errands – to Quik Trip for gas, and to the bank, and finally Kroger, for a
few things. We didn’t do the big grocery visit yet. She did fine, although at
one point she got mad because every other car was going faster. “You are CRAZY
people!” she snarled.
Michael laughed. “Sounds like you,
Mom!”
