I have discovered something interesting about myself. I have finally let go entirely of this notion of having the perfect Christmas, and now I am willing to settle for something where we are simply all together and no fire extinguisher is needed.
I used to want everything to be perfect. Spotlessly clean house. Delicious, perfect food. Gifts that dazzle and amaze everyone. Folks gathered around the piano singing carols.
Of course, I'd like a bunch of relatives to come over, too, but that never happens. It's just us. Minus my daughter, who chooses to spend Christmas elsewhere.
Now, I am willing to settle for a quiet holiday, where I don't necessarily have to do any cooking and/or cleaning all day. Where I can do something radical like.... sit and read a BOOK. That's my idea of fun.
I have spent the entire day, pretty much, cooking and cleaning. Well, Michael and I did watch the end of The Green Mile late this morning, and we ventured out briefly, but otherwise it's been a cooking and cleaning frenzy. And to show for it, my house is marginally cleaner, and I have a double batch of Pumpkin Spice Bread batter in the outside fridge, but no actual loaves made. And I've got steaks marinating, a salad 9/10ths made, and I am going to start cooking cornbread when my brother finally gets here.
Michael and I went to Walgreens to pick up a prescription and there was nobody out and about. NOBODY. Oh, except for around Northlake Mall. There, the parking lot was choked with cars. I am so glad my shopping is DONE.
I don't have to work tomorrow, but I am going in for a few hours anyway. I get paid by the hour. No work = no pay, and I can't afford that. So hopefully I will be home by about noon. Then I will bake pumpkin bread and get it delivered, and probably make a pecan pie, and perhaps run to the grocery store. I lost my list yesterday and we don't have certain essential items, like sausage for the breakfast casserole we eat Christmas morning, or anything for dinner tomorrow night.
My friend Sarah posted this video on Facebook and it's so funny. It's Mr Bean.
