I love old photos, particularly of people I know, and/or I am related to. I had a request from one of my cousins yesterday to send some old photos of my mom's family [the Butlers], and I scanned some in that Mother and I located in an old photo album. These were made in the 1940's. The hunt is on for some additional photos, too.
This was made right around the time of World War II being over, around 1944. My mother is sitting on the steps and my grandfather has his arms around her. My uncle Don is on the left. He would've been around 14. The handsome dark-haired guy in the sweater is my uncle Bob Hasty Jr.
Papa tried to enlist when WWII started but they wouldn't take him because he was in his 40's. Uncle Bobby served in Virginia, at the naval base there. His job was to pull pilots out of wrecked aircraft - and he was 17 years old.
Above, another shot of Bobby and Don. I know Don was a young teen because within a few years he was as tall as Bobby.
Left: Elva her brother Don. Right: Wilma Butler Hasty [my grandmother]
Above is my great grandmother, Beulah Phillips Butler, with two of her grandsons [who were both adopted, just FYI]. She was an amazing person.
- She got married at 18 to my great grandfather, Robert Edward Butler.
- They had 13 children, 12 of whom lived to adulthood.
- She sent her youngest son off to boarding school in Florida and he came home with a wife [they were around 16 years old]. She took in her daughter in law and loved her like her own.
- She had her last child at the age of 54. Mother remembers "Granny" Butler very well, and said she was a character.
I will be scanning in more photos in the next few days...
