One of the nurses who has helped me so much with my mother the past few months, Mariatu, moved here from Sierra Leone. She has become a friend. Her compassion is boundless. She has started a charity to help children in her home country to get a decent education. Their first fundraiser is November 17. Please take a moment to read her press release, below, and if you can't go to the fundraiser please consider a donation. It's tax deductible.
Uplift and Educate Sierra Leone International’s First Annual Dinner Dance
Hi this Mariatu Turay and I want to tell you about a unique opportunity to make a difference in the life of a child.
In my home country of Sierra Leone, little girls face great challenges to being educated. Lack of books, lack of supplies, a building with no electricity – these are just some of the challenges. Families living in poverty often let the girls get married as young as age 12.
The road to being educated and independent is very, very difficult for these girls. War, disease, poverty – they live in a world most Americans cannot imagine.
For years, I have gone home to Magburaka for visits and carried books, school supplies – whatever I can take. I personally pay the school fees for 6 girls.
I have dreamed for years of expanding my efforts to help the children of my hometown to be educated, and to have a chance at a decent life. My main concentration is girls, but by God's grace I also wish to included boys and also extend myself throughout Sierra Leone.
Recently, I applied for and received 501C3 status for my charity, Uplift and Educate Sierra Leone International. So every donation can be counted as a tax deduction.
Please save the date Friday November 17th. I am having a dinner fundraiser dance at the Candler Event Hall 2942 Ember Dr. Doors will open at 8p.m.- 2a.m. Music will be supplied by Dj Tony Okonne & Dj SuperKid. Food will be supplied by Jay’s Restaurant. Register online here.
Dress up and come ready to dance the night away!
